Abstract

An Expert Panel group of scientists and clinicians met to consider several aspects related to non-fasting and postprandial triglycerides (TGs) and their role as risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this context, we review recent epidemiological studies relevant to elevated non-fasting TGs as a risk factor for CVD and provide a suggested classification of non-fasting TG concentration. Secondly, we sought to describe methodologies to evaluate postprandial TG using a fat tolerance test (FTT) in the clinic. Thirdly, we discuss the role of non-fasting lipids in the treatment of postprandial hyperlipemia. Finally, we provide a series of clinical recommendations relating to non-fasting TGs based on the consensus of the Expert Panel: 1). Elevated non-fasting TGs are a risk factor for CVD. 2). The desirable non-fasting TG concentration is <2 1-2="1-2" 10="10" 2.5="2.5" 25="25" 3="3" 4="4" 5="5" 6="6" 75="75" 7="7" 8="8" a="a" acid.="acid." after="after" aggressive="aggressive" an="an" and="and" any="any" as="as" at="at" be="be" by="by" carbohydrates="carbohydrates" concentration="concentration" considered="considered" consist="consist" could="could" desirable="desirable" dl="dl" drugs="drugs" evaluation="evaluation" fast="fast" fat="fat" fibrates="fibrates" for="for" ftt.="ftt." ftt="ftt" g="g" given="given" good="good" h="h" higher="higher" including="including" l="l" levels="levels" lifestyle="lifestyle" like="like" lowering="lowering" meal="meal" measurement="measurement" mg="mg" mmol="mmol" modification="modification" nicotinic="nicotinic" non-fasting="non-fasting" nutritional="nutritional" of="of" or="or" postprandial="postprandial" preferably="preferably" protein.="protein." provides="provides" response.="response." response="response" should="should" single="single" standardized="standardized" statins="statins" subjects="subjects" supplementation="supplementation" tested="tested" testing="testing" tg="tg" the="the" time="time" treated="treated" undesirable="undesirable" with="with">
