Some Herbal Treatments:
Some Herbal Treatments:To note studies are weak and most not approved by FDA, patients have to have some risk. Some doctors are using themselves these herbes. Some herebes no doubt proved dangerous. However, no doubt some of them work very well. FDA should be involved more in these herbes since some of them really work well with alomst no side effects.
Antiaging: From data available it is reasonably to try Alpha Lipoic Acid it as 100-600 mg once before sleep for patients with uncontrolled diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, Alzheimer disease and after strokes. It also proved beneficial to patients with glaucoma, cataract, HIV, pancreatic cancer and chronic inflammation. One Study showed alpha-lipoic acid to decrease cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis in diabetes-induced rats. The caution is studies are small and few, unlikely we will have large studies unless financed by the government.
Dyslipidemia: Pantethine is used as 300 mg po tid for high cholestrol (decrease LDL 20%, TG 32% and increase HDL 8% in one study)also effective in people with recurrent candida infection. Pantethine can be used with garlic for both conditions.
Parkinsonism: Coenzyme Q-10: Cells need energy to survive and function. They contain mitochondria, which are “batteries” that produce energy. In Parkinson's disease, there seems to be a disturbance in the function of these batteries. Coenzyme Q10 seems to affect this energy-generating mechanisms in cells, although the exact mechanism remains a mystery. A recent study suggested that treatment with 1200 mg/day of coenzyme Q10 resulted in improvements in measures of motor function over the fixed period of the study when compared to lower doses of the same compound or to a placebo compound. Coenzyme Q-10 was also found to be safe in this trial. A larger trial sponsored by NIH and the Parkinson Study Group is underway which will test 1200mg or 2400mg versus a placebo compound.
