Except for aspirin, there is no definite study to say taking all these vitamins and supplements are life savers. Common sense and few studies justify them to be helpful. Thus an average middle age men or women will likely benefit from:
1- Baby aspirin for men over 40 and women over 50 with risk factors of cardiovascular disease.
2- Multivitamin particularly the one for seniors since it have more vitamin B, lycopene that may prevent cancer and zeaxanthin that help prevent macular degeneration.
3- Calcium + vitamin D tablets twice a day for total of 1200 mg + 800 units respectively.
4- Omega 3 fatty acids or fish oil 1 gram twice a day. It is an antioxidant with benefits for the heart and cholesterol particularly triglycerides.
5- Co enzyme Q10 100 mg once a day which is important for mitochondria function the power house of the cells of human body.
6- Vitamin C 500 mg twice a day. Anti-oxidant good for a lot of body functions including bones and joints.
7- Vitamin E 400 units daily.
7- L carnitine 100 mg daily. Helps muscle function and help prevent dementia.
8- Alpha lipoic acid 100 mg daily. Helps to prevent dementia.
9- Pycnogenol 100 mg daily. It is a powerful antioxidant and help dilate the arteries and help in erection.
10- Vitamin B complex one a day particularly in patients with pain, neuropathy and carpal tunnel.
11- Biotin 2000-4000 micro gram daily particularly in patients with hair loss or nail disease. It also help improve control of diabetes.
12- Magnesium chloride Slow Mg or similar 1-2 tab a day after insuring normal kidney test.
Note for migraine headaches: magnesium 400 mg daily + riboflavin 400 micg daily + coenzyme Q10 100 mg daily + feverfew powder 100 mg daily if not effective butterbaur 100 mg daily.
Note most herbals are 100 mg daily except for omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil, Glucosamine, Chondritin Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) about 1000-1500 mg daily.
Note a lot of herbs cause blood to thin so avoid with coumadin if possible and other blood thinners. All to be held 2 weeks prior to surgery.
